“It’s OK, we’re under siege, but they’re able to bring in bread” – “OK great but listen, if you want to come to Lebanon…” Akkar, Lebanon: 110 refugees live in tents erected within a disused slaughterhouse. At night, the men get on their mobiles and text home, hoping for news from friends and relatives still trapped along the front lines of the civil war. Later, I photographed their phones and had the messages they hadn’t deleted (for security) translated from Arabic to English.
