Most of the tobacco production in Nayarit is for the International companies like British American Tobacco and TADESA, the last one belongs to CIGATAM and for a while the 50.01% belonged to Carlos Slim, he sold it and now belongs to Philip Morris International. This companies, including Carlos Slim, despite obtaining billions of dollars in profits, did not meet their responsabilities towards the day laborers, that are still living and working under extremely precarious conditions. With the sale of his 50.01% share, Carlos Slim obtained a 1.8 billion dollars profit ; a tobacco day laborer earns about 100 mexican pesos a day, 2,800 mexican pesos a month or 180 dollars a month but they have to pay for their food , travel expenses and for their medical care because their contractors don’t provide them with health care.
