SHOWCASE: 2013 LUCIE FOUNDATION EMERGING SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT JUSTIN BARTON.

We are proud to share the work of Justin Barton, this year's recipient of the Lucie Foundation Emerging Scholarship cash grant. Justin's work focuses on personal history and heritage through architecture, interiors, portraiture and landscapes. We were very impressed with his submission "Atomic War in Details" and awarded him the cash grant to continue work on this series.

The images shown below and many more were created as a result of the scholarship. Read his statement below to learn more about these portraits.

The 2014 application cycle will open on November 1, 2013 and close on January 31, 2014.

"My work is often concerned with social history and historiography and I attempt to encourage the viewer to relativise the different perspectives they see. In the case of my series "Atomic War In Details" this partially takes the form of a direct comparison between the two sides of the Cold War. I was initially taking photographs of the objects they used (and in some cases these are still in current usage) in the environments they worked in. This allows for an ethnographic exploration and the tiniest details of the images speak volumes of the ideologies of both sides.

With funding from the Lucie Foundation I was not just able to travel to the US and Ukraine to track down further artifacts to photograph, but I was able to further the scope of the project with a series of portraits of those involved. This included missile and maintenance crew and even the commanders who were responsible for the very fate of the world on a daily basis for many years.

This human connection was a vital element to add to the work especially as nuclear weaponry and their consequences often seem far removed in scale to us personally. Indeed, we have come to describe the end of civilization as a mere the press of a button as a consequence. These images allow us the opportunity of contrast not just from one side to another but with ourselves. What choices would we make in their positions? What makes them similar? Does this impact our view on humanity and the human condition?" - Justin Barton, 2013 Lucie Foundation Emerging Scholarship Recipient.
